Fire Safety

Protecting Your Home and Loved Ones

Fires can happen in the blink of an eye, but with the right precautions, you can significantly reduce the risks. Fire safety is a critical component of every home and business. Whether you're preparing for potential hazards or handling an emergency, knowing the basics can help you act swiftly and safely.

Alarms and detectors

Our properties are equipped with fire alarms connected to a fire panel for enhanced safety.

Did you know that you are ten times more likely to die in a fire if your property doesn’t have working smoke alarms on every floor?

If you think your detector might be faulty or if you have a concern, please report it to us ASAP.

Evening Checks

Close before you doze! Ensure all internal doors are closed to help prevent the spread of fire.

Turn off and unplug electrical appliances, unless they are intended to remain on, like your fridge or freezer.

Double-check that the cooker is switched off.

Keep all exits clear at all times.

Smoking and Candles

For the safety and well-being of all residents, we kindly remind everyone that smoking and lighting candles are strictly prohibited within the property. These actions pose a significant fire risk. Please use designated outdoor areas for smoking and consider alternative lighting options to ensure a safe living environment. Thank you for your cooperation.

Carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is often called the "silent killer" because it is invisible, tasteless, and odorless, yet its fumes are extremely poisonous, leading to around 50 deaths and hundreds of injuries each year. CO poisoning can occur in just minutes or over a prolonged period, depending on the concentration of CO in the air. Symptoms include:

Headaches

Dizziness

Nausea

Shortness of breath

Fainting

Loss of consciousness

Warning signs to watch for:

Symptoms occur only when you’re at home and improve or disappear when you leave.Others in your household, including pets, are experiencing similar symptoms.

Black, sooty marks on the front covers of gas appliances.

Sooty or yellow/brown stains around boilers, stoves, or fires.

Symptoms appear when appliances are in use, such as when the boiler is on.

Increased condensation on windows.

Pilot lights frequently blowing out.

Yellow or unsteady flames from gas appliances, or flames that are not fully formed

(e.g., a gas hob flame that doesn’t surround the burner completely).

What to do if you suspect CO poisoning:

Open windows and doors to ventilate and let fresh air in.

If safe, turn off the gas appliance.

Leave the house and get to fresh air as quickly as possible.

Seek medical attention immediately by contacting your GP or going to the hospital. Make sure to mention the possibility of CO poisoning.

Before re-entering your home, call the gas emergency number at 0800 111 999 and report the situation.

Communal Areas

Ensure that all communal areas, including corridors, walkways, and stairwells, are kept clear at all times.

Fire Doors

Never prop open the communal doors in your building, as they help prevent the spread of fire and smoke in the event of a fire. If you notice a door that is propped open, please close it immediately.
