Electrical Safety

Electrical safety advice for residents

Proper care of electrical equipment is essential for your safety. Even if something appears to be working, it doesn’t guarantee it’s safe. Regular maintenance and checks help prevent potential hazards.

How to make sure electrical equipment is safe:

Plugs

Ensure plugs fit securely into sockets.

The plug casing should be free from cracks.

Look out for burn marks or signs of overheating.

The cable should be tightly secured within the plug.

Pins should not be bent.

Remove any cardboard labels from the bottom of the plug.

Plugs should not rattle.

Leads

Check that leads are free from cuts, fraying, or any other damage.

Avoid using two- or three-way adaptors.

When using an extension lead, ensure it is fully uncoiled.

Sockets

Ensure sockets are free from cracks or visible damage.

Look for burn marks or signs of overheating.

Make sure sockets are securely attached to the wall.

Ensure the switch is functioning properly.

Lighting

Inspect light fittings or lamp holders for visible damage, scorching, or corrosion.

Examine downlighters and their surroundings for signs of overheating, such as curled labels, discoloration, or scorching.
